Event Update #6 - (Please read) Getting ready for the Challenge

1. My teammate Julie and I tested the course yesterday. Yes, in the rain.  We did not do the kayaking section and we used mountain bikes.  it took us 3.5 hour (60% of checkpoints)to just do the bike and trek.  So we shortend the course. We have left you 1 hour to do the kayking.

2. If you attempt to get every checkpoint, it will take you 6+ hours.  This is not going to be fun.  So, please watch your time.

3. The trekking section is super hilly. If it stays wet, please make sure to not go too fast and slip.

4. Rain or shine, we will have a challenge on Saturday.  Bring a jacket.

5. Bring a watch/timer with you.  The winning team will most likely be the one to come in in less than 4 hours.

6. I have decided to provide the maps to you on Friday morning.  This will give you a day to plan your route and strategy. We also depend on the honor system.  So please don't checkout the course until Saturday.

7.  I will be available to answer any and all questions abou the event on Friday.  Just email me.  Believe me, with all the information we give you, you will still have a challenge ahead :)

8. Write this down.  Here is how much time you should plan on for the event.

30 minute kayak

10 minutes total kayak transition for arriving and leaving

45 minute of trekking

15 minutes total trekking transition for arriving and leaving.

2 hours of biking

if you exceed these times, you will likely not make it back in time. Which will make me sad.

9. The checkpoints are setup in a such a way as to provide the safest route of travel.

I will send one more update on Thursday.

Email me if you have questions.

Event Update #5 - Two weeks to fun day.

Good President's Day morning

We are finalizing the maps for you.  In total, you will be given 3 maps for the event, a city map, A kayaking map, and a trekking map.  The city map will be given to you at the start line.  The kayaking map will be given to you at the kayaking area.  And the trekking map will be given to you at the trail head by a volunteer.  Lastly Keep in mind that I will email the maps on Friday Feburary 27 at 8pm.  You can use these maps for homework.

Food - We will have BBQ, Hamburgers ( beef and veggie), fruit, and cheesecake.  We are extremely sensitive to people's diets.  So we will keep things healthy, simple , but tasty.  Cheesecake may not be healthy, but it is an adventure tradition.

Kayaking - Many of you have come out to practice.  You have 2 more opportunities, this Wednesday and next

Teamwork - As triathletes, you had to only worry about yourself.  You now have a teammate to think about.  Fun and success will come through good teamwork.

Off-limits -  El Camino Real will be off limit to all participants.  You can cross El Camino Real, but you cannot ride along El Camino Real.

Safety - Having fun, going fast, and having an adventure are great, but safety is our #1 priority.  Please use  good judgment at all times.

Event Update #4

Good Morning

With less than 3 weeks to go to the event, more questions are coming to my emails.  Here are some answers to help you get ready.

Will rain cancel the event?

No, it just mean that you have to be more careful on the roads.  This is no different than your usual road bike ride.

What should we wear?

If it was me, I would wear road bike gear and carry my running shoes with me.

Where is the Start/Finish of the challenge?

840 Brittan Ave, San Carlos.  This is not a "tansition area".  You will leave to face the callenge and then return to have the BBQ and cheese cake.  Yes, there is a long cheese cake tradition associated with Adventure Events.

Where will we kayak?

For those of you that have come out to practice kayaking, you have a pretty good idea of where the kayak section is going to be.  For the address, look at the previous News Updates on this site.

http://triadventurechallenge.eventbrite.com/

Where do we do the foot section?

That is a great question.  If I told you, it would not be an adventure.

Can I get all the checkpoints?

Not possible with the 4 hour limit.  Remember, 10 point penalty for every minute you are late.

Why do you call it a challenge?

Simple.  For most of you this will be unlike any event you have done.  This is not a race but a challenge to work together as a team, make decisions as a team, and come to the finish line as a team.  Route selection and time management will be the keys to success.  As I mentioned earlier, the fastest team last year finished 1 hour ahead of the second place team.  But.., it was the 5th place finisher who was able to get more checkpoints and win the event.

Can I use GPS?

Nope :)

Event Update #3

Good morning!!  We had a great turnout last week at the Wednesday kayak.  For those that showed up, you learned that tandem kayaking is not just about fitness, but more about teamwork.  Communication on the kayak is critical.

Yes, we will be kayaking again this Wednesday.  Here are the details. (6:45 pm at the Aquan Boat House (1097 Seal Court, San Mateo).  Kayak, PFD, and paddles are provided.  Cost is $0 for event participants until February 28.  Please RSVP (Hanijuha@gmail.com). Bring a base layer, a jacket, and a headlight.  Also bring a change of clothing.) We also have a tradition of getting Pho soup after the kayak if you are interested.

"Not Knowing"- Unlike most activities that you do as a triathlete, Adventure Events focus on the unkown.  Get comfortable with that.  Why do you need to know everything anyway? :)   You know the start and finish location.  For those of you that have come out to kayak, you can figure out where we will paddle.  And..  There will be one more park for you to do your trek.  Since you only have 4 hours to do the event, you can guess that the park will need to be close to the start/finish and the kayak.

Food/Water -  At a minimum, bring a water bottle and bar.  More is good, but a $20 will go a long way at local stores and gas stations.

The course - As I review the planned course, I am convinced that no one will be able to get every checkpoint. And..if you are more than 30 minutes late to the finish, you will lose all points you have collected.  So, race smart. :)

Event Update #2 (Jan. 27)

1.  Kayak Practice - If you are interested in getting some kayaking practice, you are invited to join me on every Wednesday at 6:45 pm at the Aquan Boat House (1097 Seal Court, San Mateo).  Kayak, PFD, and paddles are provided.  Cost is $0 for event participants until February 28.  Please RSVP (Hanijuha@gmail.com). Bring a base layer, a jacket, and a headlight.  Also bring a change of clothing.

2. The course - The course is being set to include one peninsula park, kayaking in Foster city, and biking on peninsula roads.  The course is designed to be 5+ hours.  Since you only have 4 hours to finish, you will need to make important decisions about which checkpoints to get.

3. Compass not needed.  Maps will give you clear information to get around the Peninsula.  Trail Checkpoints will be near trails. So you don't have to go off-trail.

4.Maps will be emailed to you at 8pm on Friday February 27.  THe same maps will be printed and provided to you on the event day.

5. 20 teams (40 people) have signed up. At the start of the challenge, 10 teams will be sent to kayak section first while the other 10 teams will be sent to the trek. That means that you will have to manage your time carefully in each section, allowing for enough time to complete all sections and get back home.

Event Update #1(1/19/2008)

You will receive weekly updates to help you get ready for the adventure.  Of course, if you have questions, you can email me.

1. The adventure will start and finish at the same location ( Aquan Sports), which means that there will be no transition areas.  If you are using road bike shoes, you will need to carry your running shoes with you for the trek( run, walk, jog). Stopping at a store to buy food and drinks is allowed.  So carry money

2. There will be more checkpoints than you can get in the 4 hour limit.  More difficult/ challenging checkpoints will have higher point value.  The goal is to get the most points in 4 hours.  That means that you and your team will have to make important decisions.  The fastest team did not win last year.

3. You will lose 10 points for every minute you exceed the 4 hour limit.

4. Team members must stay within 100 feet of each other at all times.  Breaking this rule will result in 100 point deduction.  This is not a relay.  It is a team event.

5. You will be paddling sit-on-top kayaks.  1 team per kayak.
